Idiopathic Subglottic Stenosis (ISS) is a rare condition characterized by the narrowing of the airway just below the vocal cords, in an area known as the sub glottis. The term "idiopathic" means that the cause of the condition is unknown, as there is no clear underlying reason for the narrowing. Many of us have theories based on our own experiences, I will be sharing my personal theories in this series. This constriction can make breathing difficult and may lead to symptoms such as hoarseness, stridor (a high-pitched sound while breathing), and respiratory distress. The severity of ISS can vary, and while it may be congenital (present at birth) or develop later in life, the exact cause remains unclear. Treatment options often include surgical interventions, such as dilation or tracheostomy and localized steroid injections to improve airflow and manage symptoms.

Luckily, it did not take long for me to be diagnosed with this disease; however, for many others who do not have ample access to medical care and amazing doctors like I did, it could take many years to be fully diagnosed. Difficulties arise because of availability of testing, time for appointments, resources to travel and a support system.

This will be the first post in a series that will be both cathartic for me and also for a cause that is incredibly important but hasn't been as widely known. We all deserve the chance to breathe!
